I painted the walrus while working on stationery for a dear friend early on in 2020, and it represents a lot. It was inspired by a stuffed walrus that my son fell in love with from the Coney Island Aquarium a few years ago. That stuffed walrus is named Walby and has come to represent everything I love about childhood. He is kind. He is loving. He is accepting. He is inclusive. He speaks with a jovial voice. He is not defined by the confines of adult expectations. He is sometimes a she. He just is. I revisited the walrus in the fall of 2020 after three seasons of a pandemic, through the renewed and continual fight for anti-racism, through the horror that children are still separated from their parents at the border, through worries over women's rights, through the frustration of having to explain to my young children that our president lacks empathy and throws fuel on the fire of racism and hate. Through feeling helpless in these fights. My sons and I talk about how to be anti-racist, about what inclusion means and about supporting and including others and celebrating our differences. We celebrate love and rainbows and flowers. We honor Walby. And this bag - This Bag - represents those conversations. The hope. The love. The joy. The sense of belonging. The togetherness. The call to activism. We are all together, and this bag is my anthem.

What else do you need to know? This canvas bag model is the same as the famous New Yorker bag - except softer. I've been using my New Yorker bag for years because I love everything about the shape and size, and I finally wanted one that had my own design on it. Enter The Walby.

If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less, but to dream more, to dream all the time.

Page headers currently feature lyrics from Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody),” written by David Byrne. This song, along with The Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus,” has been stuck in my head for the better part of 2020 and is making the pandemic more tolerable and inspiring me to create new beauty around me. I hope it brings you some joy too.
